SHARON, Pa. -- Third- and fourth-grade winners of the Good Citizen program in the Sharon City School District will be treated to a performance of "The Princess and the Magic Pea" Saturday at Buhl Farm, Hermitage.
The show is a production of the Young Artists Series of Columbia Theatre and features children from the area.
The Sharon pupils will meet at the Buhl Farm Activities Building at 1:30 p.m., then travel to the park's Casino for the show.
Pupils who demonstrate the use of good manners can be selected as Good Citizens in the Sharon program.
The play performance is sponsored by Buhl Farm Trustees, Sharon Lifelong Learning Council, Sharon City School District and Columbia Theatre.
Student art exhibit
SHARON, Pa. -- Penn State Shenango is holding a student art exhibit now through May 6 in the Lecture Hall Study Lounge, 147 Shenango Ave. More than 40 works of art are on display.
Rescue Mission namesnew executive director
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Kevin A. Green has been named the executive director and chief executive officer of the New Castle City Rescue Mission.
He has been serving as interim executive director since December 2000. He joined the staff in June 2000 as financial operations director and has been an integral part of the administration since that time.
Green, his wife, Mary Lee and their daughter, Kelly Grace, live in Brighton Township, Beaver County, Pa., and plan to move to New Castle in the next few months.
A community reception is planned for 2 to 4 p.m. April 29 at the Mission's Sankey Youth Center, 125 W. Grant St.
Thiel receives grant
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College has received a $6,760 grant from the Aid Association for Lutherans. The money is a match for gifts given to Thiel by AAL members. The fraternal-based society matches gifts of $25 to $100 made by its members to Lutheran schools, colleges and seminaries.
Deer herd declines
BOARDMAN -- A recent infrared scan of the Hitchcock Woods section of Mill Creek Park shows the deer population at 59, down from 200-plus in some earlier counts. A third controlled bow hunt in the park ended Jan. 28. Hunters took 21 deer this year. Officials have said Hitchcock Woods can handle no more than 20 to 30 deer.
Raid nets 2 arrests
BOARDMAN -- Two men were arrested in a raid on a Shields Road apartment just after 10 a.m. Thursday.
Calvin C. Roby Sr., 49, of 123 Shields Road, is charged with aggravated drug trafficking, and Dennis M. Welsh, 43, of North Dunlap Avenue, Youngstown, was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court on an unrelated theft charge.
The raid culminates an undercover investigation of several months by the Boardman Police Narcotics Enforcement Unit. Sgt. Michael Hughes, the unit supervisor, said officers had to use a sledgehammer to break through Roby's apartment door because it was fortified with a steel bar.
Donation box stolen
FARRELL, Pa. -- Police said a donation box was stolen from Fatima Church at 601 Roemer Blvd. on Thursday. The box disappeared between 5 and 9 a.m. and police said they are looking for a man seen loitering around the church after morning mass. He was described as a light-skinned black man about 5 feet 5 inches tall and wearing dark clothing.
More charges broughtagainst robbery suspect
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Additional charges have been filed against a man accused of robbing a pizza delivery man in Union Township on Sunday.
William Quinn, 42, of 711 W. Main St., was arrested early Monday and lodged in Lawrence County Jail on charges of robbery, simple assault and theft.
Authorities say he took money at gunpoint from a pizza delivery man on Camden Avenue. New Castle police say Quinn was involved in two similar robberies on West Main Street this month. Two counts each of robbery and making terroristic threats were filed this week by police.
Police said about $70 was taken at gunpoint from a Pizza Outlet delivery man on March 18 and $120 from a Little Johnny's Pizza driver on March 24.
