McDONALD -- The school board will divide its remodeling and building plans into three parts for submission to the Ohio School Facilities Commission.
The commission must approve the plans, which will involve renovation of the high school, building an elementary school and razing an old school.
The plans are:
*The boiler/electric/asbestos and switch gear packages for work at the high school, as submitted by architects Ricciuti and Balog, Youngstown, and certified by O'Brien Kreitzberg of Pittsburgh, Pa., construction manager for the project;
*Site and foundation packages for the new elementary school to be built behind the high school, as submitted by MS Consultants of Youngstown and certified by the O'Brien firm;
*The building package for the new elementary school, as submitted by MS Consultants and certified by the O'Brien firm.
The high school renovation will cost $7.9 million. Construction of the new elementary school is expected to cost $7.5 million and demolition of the existing Roosevelt Elementary School will cost $500,000. The district has received $14.5 million from the commission and borrowed another $2 million through a 23-year bond issue to pay for the work.
Detailed presentation: During the board's meeting Thursday, Dominic DeLuco and Cherie A. Hayek of MS Consultants presented the board with a new series of color schemes for the new elementary building, including packages depicting proposed carpet, flooring and paint colors and types, hallway designs and the layout for both the dining area and the gymnasium/stage area.
The exterior of the building will be brick that will match the high school exterior brick as closely as possible, with other accent colors in brick added.
Don Lange, construction manager from O'Brien Kreitzberg told the school board that plans are to let contracts for the elementary school in August or September. The projected date for completion of the elementary school is Aug. 23, 2002.
In other business, the board accepted the resignation of long-time teacher and student advisor, Mrs. Joan Miles, high school business teacher, effective June 30.
Parents attending the session expressed displeasure over a new grading system started this year. High school principal John Larocca will meet with teachers to review the system for next year, and parents will later be consulted as to the system's future.
