JOHN W. EDWARDS, 83 Was financial editor of The Vindicator



CANFIELD -- A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, for John W. Edwards, 83, of 202 Fairground Blvd., who died Wednesday evening in Forum Health Beeghly Medical Park emergency room.
Mr. Edwards was born July 1, 1917, in Youngstown, a son of Watkin R. and Eva Sweetwood Edwards.
A graduate of Boardman High School, where he won letters in basketball and football, he attended Ohio State and Youngstown State universities.
He worked for The Vindicator for 38 years beginning in 1945 as part-time sports reporter. He was a makeup editor and then became financial editor in 1971. He retired May 30, 1983.
He previously was a regulator in the Bessemer department of Youngstown Sheet & amp; Tube and after his retirement, he worked at the pro shop of Diamondback Golf Course.
He was a former member of Canfield Presbyterian Church and was a member of Rotary Club of Canfield, where he served as secretary for 10 years. He also was a member of the Youngstown Newspaper Guild Local 11 and played in several golf leagues and bridge clubs.
Besides his wife, the former Margaret E. Hoover, whom he married April 9, 1938; he leaves a daughter, Diane Playforth of Ellsworth; three sons, John J. and Theodore H., both of Salem, and Harry L. of Port Clinton; two brothers, Watkin R. of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Theodore H. of St. Simon, Ga.; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A sister, Elmyra Black, and a brother, William, are deceased.
Friends may call one hour before the service at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
