HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL Canfield opens with win; Struthers 2-0



Howland had a seven-run rally in the seventh inning to win.
LISBON -- Senior Neil Guerrieri and sophomore Dan Leonard combined on a no-hitter as Canfield High posted an 11-1 win over Beaver Local (0-2) in a high school baseball game Thursday.
Guerrieri (1-0) went the first four innings and Leonard came on in the fifth. They had four strikeouts with just two walks for the Cardinals (1-0).
Scott Wadman hit a three-run home run, Mike Keating added a two-run homer while Dave Miller and Tom Banna each had two hits.
Struthers 12, Lowellville 0: STRUTHERS -- Jared Bogan threw a no-hitter, the second in two days for the Wildcats (2-0).
Bogan, a junior, also struck out 12 and hit a two-run homer while Matt Bradley added three hits, one a double, and three RBIs.
Also for the Wildcats, Jason Rosenberger had a single and a double.
Jackson-Milton 7, Newton Falls 4: NORTH JACKSON -- Vince MacLarren hit a triple and single, score three times, drove in a run and stole a base for Jackson-Milton (2-0).
Eric Lance of Newton Falls (0-1) hit a triple and double and drove in three runs.
McDonald 8, Rayen 2: YOUNGSTOWN -- Winning-pitcher Mark Brown had two hits while Mike Dunn drove in three runs for the Blue Devils.
Brown and Haselow combined on a two-hitter in the game played at Oakland Field.
A four-run third gave McDonald a 5-0 lead but Rayen scored twice in the fourth to cut it to 5-2.
Poland 11, Hubbard 1: POLAND -- John Hay and Cole Budinsky collaborated on a two-hitter for Poland, which finished with 11 hits.
Hay started and got the win. Budinsky came on in the fourth and retired the final six batters he faced, giving up just one hit and striking out four.
Sean Clayton had two hits and two RBIs while Jeff Moore and Shane Davis each had two RBIs, to also lead Poland (2-0).
Hubbard was in its opener.
In a game played Wednesday, Share Davis had three hits with five RBIs as Poland defeated Fitch 12-5.
Fitch 6, Liberty 0: AUSTINTOWN -- Shawn Barber pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts over the distance for Austintown Fitch. Liberty is 0-2.
Steve Burnich had two singles and two RBIs to lead Fitch, while Mike DeToro added two singles and one RBI.
Columbiana 15, Leetonia 1: LEETONIA -- Dean Stokes had three hits including a triple, two doubles, a walk, four runs scored and he had three RBIs for the Clippers (1-1, 1-1 Tri-County League).
Josh Kistler threw a two-hitter in the five-inning game and he collected a double while catcher Darek Stanfield had three RBIs. Nate Shaw also singled in two runs. Leetonia is 0-2, 0-2.
Howland 9, Boardman 6: BOARDMAN -- Ted Bellay's bases-loaded double drove in two runs to tie the score a 6-6, then Kyle Moore's single brought in the go-ahead tally, to highlight Howland's seven-run rally in the seventh inning.
Moore also had another single and RBI, while Ron Hooper slugged a two-run homer and run-scoring single to also lead the Tigers (1-0). Boardman is 1-1.
Hooper also got the mound win in relief of Matt Hundley.
Louisville 5, West Branch 1: BELOIT -- Held to just one hit by the Leopards' Justin Boulder, West Branch's (1-1) Drew Romigh hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Josh Scott, who had doubled, in the first inning.
Allen Bressos went 3-for-4 for Louisville (1-1).
Mineral Ridge 4, Bristol 3: MINERAL RIDGE -- With two outs in the top of the seventh inning Mineral Ridge (1-1) scored the deciding run when Kendall Koskoski singled home Dan Barton, who led off with a single.
Nathan Zimmerman (1-0) of the Rams worked six innings and struck out eight to pick up the win.
Barton led Mineral Ridge with three singles and Eric Besoiu had two singles.
