BASKETBALL Paine, Schmidt lead TCL boys stars past ICL



The TCL girls made it a sweep.
COLUMBIANA -- Jamey Paine's 12 points and Ian Schmidt's 11 led the Tri-County All-Star basketball team to a 90-87 victory over the Inter-County League Stars Thursday at Crestview High School.
Paine of East Palestine scored six baskets while Schmidt of Columbiana connected for three baskets (including a 3-pointer) and four free throws for the winners.
Joe Pavlich of East Palestine scored 10 points for Tri-County, who were coached by Jeff Hammond of Columbiana.
Lowellville's Mark Templeton made 10 baskets for 21 points to lead the ICL squad.
Todd Cope of McDonald scored seven baskets for 17 points while Jon Hochendoner of Jackson-Milton made six for 15 points. Chris Nagle of McDonald scored 11 points for the ICL, coached by Lowellville's Dennis Hynes.
In the 3-point shootout, Chris Hatch of South Range won the contest with 20 treys.
Girls: Tiffany Smith of Division IV regional finalist Leetonia scored six baskets for 12 points to lead the Tri-County girls squad to an 80-53 romp over the Inter-County League squad.
Ashley Souder of Columbiana scored 11 points for the Tri-County, who were coached by Leetonia's Jerry Beltempo. Randi Townsend of Crestview scored 10 points.
For Lowellville coach Tony Matisi's Inter-County League team, Michelle Morrison of Western Reserve scored five baskets for 11 points.
Valerie Goudy scored eight points and won the 3-point competition with 16 made.
