YOUNGSTOWN -- An 18-year-old Youngstown man is one of two survivors of a Coast Guard boating accident in western New York.
William Simpson was one of four crewmen aboard a Coast Guard patrol boat near Youngstown, N.Y., when a 4-foot wave capsized the boat Friday evening, sending the crew into Lake Ontario.
"The two who survived are going through grief counseling right now," said Paul Roszkowski, public affairs specialist with the Coast Guard. They were in the water about five hours before being rescued about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Simpson and the other survivor, Michael Moss, 21, of Greensboro, N.C., were treated for hypothermia.
The two other crewmen died.
Fire victim identified
BERLIN CENTER -- The woman who died after a fire at her Heiser Road home Wednesday morning has been identified as Helene Albright Helsel, 49.
Her husband, Donald, 44, is in critical condition at Akron Burn Unit. The fire is under investigation.
River cleanup
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Association of Churches' Global Warming Task Force and the Mahoning River Consortium are sponsoring two events to help clean up the Mahoning River and its watershed.
The first, April 21, will focus on Yellow Creek in Poland.
The second, April 28, focuses on the Mahoning River near downtown Warren.
Incumbents endorsed
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Chapter of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus has endorsed the re-election of incumbents in the May 8 Democratic primary. Receiving endorsements were: Municipal Court Judge Robert Douglas, council President Charles Sammarone and Mayor George M. McKelvey.
Funds for research
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kids Coins for Cancer and Spinning for a Cure, two Mahoning Valley Cancer Society events, have raised $68,000 for research, education and service.
Twenty-seven Mahoning County schools participated in the annual activity that teaches students about healthy living and how to reduce the risk of cancer. Canfield Middle School raised the most -- $3,085.
Used-book sale
GIRARD -- St. Rose School, 61 Main St., will have its 11th annual used-book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
A bake sale and raffle also are planned. Raffle tickets are available from students or at the school office. Book donations are also being accepted.
New on health board
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Health District Advisory Council has chosen Scott Thompson of Hartford as a new board of health member. He replaces Tim Yova, who was outvoted Wednesday at the advisory council's annual meeting.
Thompson begins serving immediately, officials said.
Water tank installation
BROOKFIELD -- The Trumbull County sanitary engineer's office is installing a 1 million-gallon storage tank off McCullen Street.
Brookfield and Hubbard service areas may experience increases in pressure, lack of pressure and short periods without water.
Stolen cars recovered,2 men are charged
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Two men are in the Mercer County jail in a car theft case involving several jurisdictions.
A 1989 Chevy Caprice was reported stolen from a parking lot in the 300 block of Arlington Drive around 12:50 p.m. Police said it was being followed by a second vehicle as it was driven away.
Sharon police spotted both about 10 minutes later and stopped them on Superior Street in Hermitage, just off North Water Avenue.
Hermitage police said the second vehicle, a 1989 Chrysler New Yorker, had been stolen in Austintown a week ago.
Hermitage police charged Robert L. Jones, 47, of Hughes Street, Youngstown, with receiving stolen property. He was driving the car stolen from Austintown.
Pymatuning police charged Ed Odem Jr., 51, of Emerson Avenue, Farrell, with the theft of the Caprice.
Odem's bond is set at $15,000; Jones' is $7,500.
