HUBBARD -- Patrick J. Clemente has resigned from the city board of education, citing health and family reasons.
Superintendent Carl Morrell read Clemente's letter of resignation at Monday's board meeting, and announced that the board will accept until April 6 applications to replace him for the remainder of this year. The board will interview applicants in executive session at 6 p.m. April 11 at the board office.
Those wishing to serve the final two years of Clemente's term must file petitions with the Trumbull County Board of Elections by Aug. 23 to run in the November election.
Clemente, 56, a salesman for Professional Electrical Products Co. of Eastlake, who was elected to the board in November 1999, did not attend Monday's board meeting. His resignation was effective immediately.
Reached at home by telephone Monday evening, Clemente said he has had a heart attack and open-heart surgery and decided to resign from the board after consulting with his physician.
Other retirements: The board also accepted the retirements of four Roosevelt Elementary School faculty members effective July 1: Janet Schrum, third-grade teacher; Loretta Crenshaw, second-grade teacher, Lynn Gombos, speech therapist; and Mary Ann Paulitz, teacher of pupils with learning disabilities.
The board approved a $33,168 contract with Boak & amp; Sons of Austintown to replace the wind-damaged roof on the swimming pool, which is between the middle and high school buildings. Insurance is covering the cost. Morrell said the new roof should be in place within two weeks.
The board also adopted a calendar for next school year with teachers starting Aug. 27 and ending June 7 and students starting Aug. 28 and ending June 6.
Board member Robert Toth said a prayer in memory of two teachers who died this month: Jack Arvin, a high school English teacher, assistant football coach and drama club director, and Carolyn Chojnacki, a teacher of children with severe behavioral handicaps children at Roosevelt.
