School finishes disinfecting heating units

GIRARD -- Heating units at the intermediate school have been disinfected, the principal said today.
More than 40 heating units throughout the building were disassembled and disinfected with bleach and then a household-type cleaner.
The work began last week after bacteria were found in the library heater. Some teachers and pupils had been complaining of itchy eyes and skin.
Tests showed the bacteria were not associated with Legionnaires' disease, Superintendent Anthony D'Ambrosia has said.
"Things seem to be OK," Robert Foley, building principal, said, noting no teachers or pupils have complained about eye and skin irritation since the units were disinfected.
