WARREN -- Relatives of an elderly Hubbard Township couple murdered in December 1999 told a judge they have been given a "life sentence of grief."
Carol London-Nuth, the daughter of Dorothy and Charles London, read a prepared statement on behalf of her family during Friday's sentencing hearing of Mark Worley, one of two men convicted of killing the Londons.
London-Nuth urged Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to sentence Worley to the maximum penalty.
"I don't want him to be able to do this to anyone ever again," London-Nuth said. "My father volunteered to serve in the Army in 1943 and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He and my mother worked hard and sacrificed to take care of us."
Conviction: Worley, 22, of Youngstown, was convicted of the murder of Charles London, 75, and the aggravated murder of Dorothy, 74. He was also convicted of two charges of kidnapping and a charge each of aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary.
Worley could have faced the death penalty but a jury decided Tuesday to recommend that Worley be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The judge followed the jury's recommendation and sentenced Worley to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the aggravated murder of Mrs. London. The judge also sentenced Worley to 15 years to life for the murder of Charles London and 10 years on each of the two kidnapping charges, and 10 years each on the aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary charges. The sentences are to be served consecutively, the judge said.
"There is no worse crime. The jury has given you more mercy than you gave the Londons," Judge Logan said.
Attorneys: Prosecutor Dennis Watkins said any sentence Worley would have received "would not be long enough."
Attys. Lou DeFabio and James Gentile, who represented Worley, said they expected the sentence.
Police said Worley went to the Londons' Hubbard Township home Dec. 15, 1999, with Scott Burrows, 20, to rob the elderly couple.
Burrows was convicted of two counts of aggravated murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
