Culinary arts team takes top honor



CANFIELD-- The Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center senior culinary arts team will compete in a statewide contest April 7 in Columbus after netting top honors at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Northeast Regional Rally.
The team competed with 16 other teams to win a two-star rating at the competition at Cuyahoga County Career & amp; Technical Center, Cleveland.
All teams were required to prepare a dinner of chicken Florentine, rice pilaf, endive salad with homemade dressing and apple ginger cake.
Team members are Gene Bionci of Lowellville, Kyle Musgrove and Shane O'Toole of Austintown, and alternate Stacy Groves of Boardman.
Others: In all, 13 MCCTC students won awards at the regional competition. The junior culinary arts team, which garnered a two-star rating, is made up of Mandi Donitzen of Austintown, Joe Murphy and Raul Ortiz of Campbell, and alternate Tony Morton of Austintown.
Individual culinary arts events winners were Jenna Cramer of Poland, who competed in the gard & eacute; manger contest; John Hightland of Sebring, dining room contest; and Jessica Lego of Campbell, pastry arts.
In the child care contests, Betsey Dickey, a junior from Springfield, won a three-star rating in the learning game/toy event; and Amanda Philips, a junior from Austintown, won a two-star rating in the language and literacy competition.
