Court orders sheriffto rehire deputy
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Sheriff's Department has again been ordered to rehire Antonio Owens as a deputy.
Owens was fired after he pleaded guilty to falsification in 1999. He appealed, and an arbiter ruled he should have been suspended instead of fired and ordered that he be reinstated.
The county appealed that ruling, which was upheld in a decision Thursday by magistrate Robert W. Bannon of common pleas court.
Bannon ruled that Owens should receive back pay and benefits with interest and that any mention of dishonesty be removed from his personnel file.
The county has 14 days to object to the ruling and ask for a review by Judge James C. Evans of common pleas court.

HOWLAND -- A township detective is looking for a woman in Columbus who may be the mother of a dead baby found in a Brookwood Drive N.E. home last weekend.
Police Chief Steve Lamantia said Detective Paul Monroe went to Columbus on Thursday.
Lamantia said the Trumbull County Coroner's Office still doesn't know the cause of death. Coroner officials said it will take about a month to get autopsy results.
The badly decomposed body was found at the house by Anthony B. Lentine Jr. around 5:15 p.m. Saturday.
Officials say the body was in the house for about a year. The infant was wrapped in plastic garbage bags and was found in an unheated crawl space behind a closet.
