HARRY D. McCONVILLE, 90 E. Liverpool school, community leader



EAST LIVERPOOL -- Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Aloysius Church for Harry D. McConville, 90, of 16537 Irish Ridge Road, who died Tuesday afternoon in East Liverpool City Hospital after a long illness.
A memorial service will be at 8 p.m. Friday at the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association Clock Tower, where viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m.
Mr. McConville was born Dec. 29, 1910, in East Liverpool, a son of Frank A. and Mary E. Dofflow McConville.
He was a volunteer aide in U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr.'s East Liverpool office and also held the same position with former Congressman Douglas Applegate for many years.
He graduated in 1930 from East Liverpool High School, where he was a varsity football and basketball player, attended Monmouth College in Illinois, and managed the A & amp;P Tea grocery store in New Cumberland, W.Va., before enlisting in the Marine Corps two days after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.
While in the service, he participated in the invasions of Guadalcanal, Guam and Okinawa, and recently contributed to a written history of the Marine Corps' 2nd Battalion, 1st Division.
He worked 30 years for the Internal Revenue Service before retiring in 1976, and in 1972 was one of two recipients of the IRS' Distinguished Service Award.
In March 2000, a proclamation by the U.S. Congress recognized his service to the community. He also received the Kent State University Distinguished Service Award.
He served on the East Liverpool Board of Education for eight years, worked to establish a KSU branch campus at East Liverpool, and was chairman of its advisory board for 20 years. He also served on the Columbiana County Board of Education for many years.
In 2000, Mr. McConville was inducted into the Lou Holtz/Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame. He also was a member of the East Liverpool High School Athletic Hall of Fame and was named a distinguished alumnus by the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association. He was a recipient of the East Liverpool Jaycees Civic Service Award.
He was a member and past president of the East Liverpool Rotary Club, one of the founders of the Blue & amp; White Nonpareil Club and the Blue & amp; White Touchdown Club, and was a member of the Frontliners of the Ohio State University football program.
He was a member of the Columbiana County Democratic Club, American Legion Post 4 and Disabled American Veterans of East Liverpool, and the church.
Among others, he leaves his sister, Leona McConville Diddle of East Liverpool.
Four brothers, Robert D., Charles, Francis and William, are deceased.
