Church to celebrate Greek independence

WARREN -- The area's Greek community is invited to celebrate Greek Independence Day at St. Demetrios Church.
The observance Sunday will feature a church service and parade.
The parade will begin around noon after a service at the church, 429 High St.
Participants are asked to wear blue and white if Greek-style costumes are not available. They are also asked to bring Greek and American flags to wave during the parade.
A Greek flag will be raised atop city hall on Mahoning Avenue, with a short ceremony featuring Father Dennis Michelis, Dr. George Ploumbis and Mayor Hank Angelo.
The parade's grand marshal will be Harry Meshel, former state senator and former chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party.
Meshel is also a member of the Greek American Progressive Association and the Society for the Preservation of the Greek Heritage.
The national holiday commemorates the Feast of the Annunciation as well as the outbreak of the War for Greek Independence.
