UNION TOWNSHIP Other business

In other business Wednesday night, Union Township supervisors took these actions:
Agreed to installation of a traffic light at the intersection of Winter Road and West Washington Street because motorists have difficulty seeing oncoming traffic there. Supervisor Steve Galizia asked that warning signs also be erected on approaches to the signal.Winter Road, which had little traffic before the development of the commercial district on U.S. Route 224 at Pa. Route 60, has become well-traveled as a shortcut from North Beaver Township and parts of New Castle.Agreed to hold evening meetings during the spring and summer at 6:30 p.m. the third Thursday of the month, beginning April 19. Meetings will continue to be held at the municipal building on Wilson Road. Supervisor Ralph Nuzzo said the move is in response to public demand.Hired Clint Garver as a part-time patrolman at $12.13 hourly to fill the vacant post resulting from the suspension of Daryl Glynn Quimby Jr. last July. Garver worked for the township in 1999 and will remain employed part-time as a police officer in Shenango Township.Supervisor Steve Galizia abstained from the motion, stating that while he has nothing against Garver, he had not been informed of the planned hiring, or of several other motions, before Wednesday's meeting. He questioned whether the law governing open meetings was broken but said later he would not pursue the question because the actions were necessary.Agreed to advertise for bids for an above-ground fuel tank to be located behind the township building to service township vehicles. The move would allow purchase of cheaper fuel and reduce record-keeping. Galizia abstained, stating again that he did not know about the motion in advance.Agreed to buy a new police car through a state group purchasing plan, which will be cheaper than advertising for bids.Authorized Supervisor Kevin Guinaugh to schedule negotiations with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees for a new four-year contract. The union represents the road department and two office workers. The current contract expires Nov. 15.Gave final approval to a subdivision for Glen Arbor Acres, a proposed condominium development across from the New Castle Airport on old U.S. Route 422.
