ROBERT GARCAR Sr., 68 Teacher, coach at Chaney for 25 years
AUSTINTOWN -- Services will be at 9 a.m. Friday at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown, and at 9:30 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for Robert Garcar Sr., 68, of 3656 High Meadow Drive, who died of cancer Tuesday evening at home after a one-year illness.
Mr. Garcar was born Nov. 18, 1932, in Youngstown, a son of Steven Lester Garcar and Elizabeth Yohman Garcar.
He taught history, social studies and health at Chaney High School from 1970 to 1995 and was an assistant football coach, head coach for girls volleyball and head baseball coach. His teams won five sectional titles and three district crowns, and in 1975, was state semifinalist, and in 1976 was state runner-up. He was also the clock operator for Chaney basketball for 30 years.
A 1950 graduate of Chaney High School, where he earned All-City Honors in football, he received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Youngstown State University. While at YSU, he earned most valuable defensive player in football his senior year and All-American honors as an offensive/defensive guard.
In 1989, he was named to the Chaney High School Hall of Fame, and in 1995, he was inducted into the YSU Hall of Fame.
He was a member of the church and several golf leagues, and he was a Navy veteran.
His first wife, the former Loretta Thurik, whom he married in 1953, died in 1989.
He leaves his wife, the former Michele Reardon, whom he married March 23, 1991; two daughters, Karen Garcar of Youngstown and Michelle Naypauer of Cleveland; two sons, Robert Jr. of Cleveland and David of Poland; a stepson, Dr. Michael Reardon of Dublin, Ohio; five sisters, Judy Birmingham of North Olmsted, and Bernice Smith, Carol Gonda, Patricia Gordulic and Mary Gonda, all of Youngstown; a brother, Steve of Newton Falls; and nine grandchildren.
A brother, James, is deceased.
