POLAND -- A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland, for Paul G. Smith Sr., 85, of GlenEllen Nursing Home, formerly of 6469 Diana Drive, who died Tuesday morning in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown.
Mr. Smith, also known as "Pete," was born June 14, 1915, in Gary, Ind., a son of Thomas Russell and Nancy Estelle Grimm Smith. He lived most of his life in this area and in 1976 moved to Vero Beach, Fla., where he lived until returning to this area a year ago.
He was a graduate of The Rayen School and attended Geneva College and Ohio University. He was employed at Republic Steel for 35 years before retiring in 1975 as a foreman.
He was a former member of Poland Presbyterian Church and a member of Western Star Masonic Lodge No. 21 where he had received his 50-year pin. He served in the Army during World War II and was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
His wife, the former Lorene B. Paden, whom he married July 7, 1945, died March 12, 2001.
He leaves a son, Paul G. Jr. of Poland, one grandson and one great-granddaughter.
Two brothers, David, and infant Thomas, are deceased.
Friends may call one hour before the service at the funeral home.
