HIGH SCHOOL Frey named Canfield athletic director

Canfield's mayor will succeed Richard Weiss, who has served for 31 years.
CANFIELD -- Lee Frey, the long-time Canfield coach, politician and teacher, is Canfield High School's new athletic director.
Frey was hired to the position by the board of education Wednesday.
He will remain in the teacher's union and make the same salary he has as an instructor, officials said.
In taking the job, Frey will be leaving behind 30 years of classroom teaching and giving up a soccer and baseball coaching career which included a trip to the soccer state finals in 1989.
Opportunity: "It is a new challenge, so sometimes you have to give up something that you love to get something else that you are going to love," Frey said. "The challenge is making it the best possible athletic program it can be."
The high school's athletic program has been highly successful during the 31-year tenure of Richard Weiss, who announced his retirement as athletic director earlier this year.
In the last 15 years, the school won the Metro Athletic Conference's all sports trophy every year but two.
Frey said he still needs to consult with the coaching staff -- Canfield sponsors 22 varsity sports -- to determine the athletic programs needs.
Potential goals: Possible goals for the future are refinishing the track, which is unusable at present, and creating a community center.
As well as teaching psychology and coaching, Frey has been active in politics, serving on city council and as mayor since 1999. He said he plans to run for re-election in November.
"You have to plan your day," he said, explaining how he finds time for his many commitments.
