HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said they caught a Stoneboro man in the act of trying to steal an all-terrain vehicle from outside the Wal-Mart store on the Shenango Valley Freeway. An officer on patrol spotted Aaron D. Beegle, 27, of Billy Boyd Road, kneeling next to the vehicle with a set of bolt cutters around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday. A chain securing the four-wheeler had been cut, police said. Beegle fought unsuccessfully with officers in an attempt to avoid arrest, police said. He was arraigned before District Justice Henry Russo on an attempted-theft charge and was freed on his own recognizance.
Charged in burglary
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- State police have charged a Volant man with the burglary of Springfield Township VFW Post 7465 on Feb. 17. Michael L. Kirchell, 36, was charged this week with burglary, criminal mischief and theft, and police said he has been ordered held for trial on all counts. Police said Kirchell entered the post after hours and removed a 25-inch television set, then sold it for narcotics. He returned to the post that same night and tried unsuccessfully to break into three machines to steal money, but wound up stealing only a beer tap, police said. Kirchell also dropped and broke a 31-inch television set in the post, police said.
Assault, neglect case
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A 30-year-old New Castle woman is accused of simple assault and neglect of care of dependent persons. Monique A. Borders of Moravia Street was arrested and arraigned Wednesday before District Justice J.V. Lamb. Police said Borders was arrested after an investigation of injuries to an 89-year-old resident at Highland Hall Care Center on West Pittsburg Road, Taylor Township, on April 21, 2000.
Charges involving child
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A North Beaver Township man faces charges of simple assault, indecent assault and corruption of minors stemming from alleged acts involving a 3-year-old boy. Pennsylvania State Police did not release any other information on the matter. Keith Andrew Critchlow, 29, of 314 Mohawk School Drive was arrested and arraigned Wednesday by District Justice J.V. Lamb and is free on $2,900 bond. Police said the charges stem from acts alleged to have occurred between Aug. 26, 2000, and Jan. 14, 2001, at Critchlow's North Beaver Township home.
Sexual assault
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested Joe M. Lemons Jr., 22, of East State Street on statutory sexual assault and other charges alleging he had illegal sexual contact with a 14-year-old city girl on Prospect Street in August and September. Lemons was arrested around 9:40 a.m. Wednesday on charges of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, corruption of minors and statutory sexual assault. He was arraigned before District Justice Henry Russo, who ordered him held in jail on $5,000 bond. Police said Lemons also smoked marijuana with the girl.
Boy held in fight
SHARON, Pa. -- Police have filed juvenile court petitions against a 12-year-old city boy accused of cutting another boy with a razor during a fight in the 100 block of Stambaugh Avenue around 2 p.m. Tuesday. Police said the victim, a 13-year-old city boy, had to have stitches to close a wound to the forehead. Police said his assailant used a razor blade to cut him. The 12-year-old is being held in a juvenile detention center, police said.
Agriculture Week
LISBON -- Columbiana County Farm Bureau is celebrating National Agriculture Week this week, honoring babies born at Salem and East Liverpool hospital, and presenting county commissioners with agriculture products produced in the county. Nancy Cope, farm bureau organization director, said agriculture provides more than 22 million jobs for Americans. With more than 80,000 farms across the state, agriculture ranks as one of the top employers in Ohio, she said.
