NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Wilmington Area School Board appointed Norbert Kendall on Monday to the Wilmington School District Education Foundation Board of Directors. The district also hired Joyce Freeman of Volant to conduct the school census in that borough, counting all children and adults. Freeman is to be paid 65 cents per name. School directors said it's been three years since the last school census was conducted in Volant. The district has advertised for census takers for Washington Township and Plain Grove.
Crystal healing
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Psychic Awareness Club at Slippery Rock University will present a crystal healing workshop featuring Dr. David Speer, well-known Pittsburgh area presenter, at 7 p.m. Thursday in Room 203 of Strain Behavioral Science Building. SRU students will be admitted free. Public admission is $10. The workshop will include details on alleviating pain, relaxing techniques and balancing chakras. It will also outline the use of this natural healing art. Crystals will be available for purchase.
Delivery driver robbed
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Pizza Outlet delivery driver was robbed at gunpoint on East Main Street on Sunday night. Police said the driver was given a fake address and started toward a house on the 700 block of East Main Street to asked if the occupants had ordered the pizza. A gunman came from behind the house and demanded money from the delivery man, police said. The delivery man handed over about $70, then drove away, police said. The victim told police the gunman was white, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, and wore a red wool knit hat, a blue or gray coat and looked as if he had not shaved in a few days.
Volleyball play-a-thon
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Contact Emergency Assistance Referral Service will sponsor its 15th annual volleyball play-a-thon Friday and Saturday at Highland Heights United Brethren Church Hall, 2929 Mercer Road. The play-a-thon is the major fund-raiser of the year and accounts for one-third of the group's annual budget. Last year more than $12,000 was raised by 30 teams. This year's goal is $15,000. Boil-water advisory
BROOKFIELD -- A boil-water advisory has been issued for portions of the township. The Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer's Department will replace a waterline between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Thursday from 7027 Warren-Sharon Road to Seaborne Street and Wynngate Manor, including Richard Drive and David Lane. The department advises that residents in those areas heat drinking water at a rolling boil for five minutes starting Thursday, until further notice.
Death ruled accidental
LISBON -- The Columbiana County Coroner's office has ruled a Cuyahoga County woman who died Dec. 30 shortly after being released from the county jail had heroin in her system. The coroner ruled the death of 42-year-old Sharon L. Wilson as accidental from a mixed drug intoxication. Coroner's investigator Fran Rudibaugh said Wilson had been taking a prescription medication to help her sleep, and apparently ingested the heroin after leaving the jail. Wilson died at Salem Community Hospital. The Columbiana County Sheriff's Department said Wilson was picked up at the jail by friends who brought her back a short time later, reporting she became ill in the car.
Burglary, theft charges
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said they have charged Edward M. Luba III, 32, of Edmond Street, Masury, in the burglary of a home in the 1500 block of Charles Street between Feb. 10 and Feb. 19. Luba was picked up Friday by Southwest Mercer County Regional Police in Farrell on a Hermitage warrant charging him with burglary and theft. Police said that eight guns were stolen in the burglary and that six of them have been recovered. Luba was arraigned before District Justice Ruth French and freed on a $15,000 unsecured bond.
