ROBERT F. WALSH JR., 57 Was competitor in drag racing



YOUNGSTOWN -- Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown, and at 11 a.m. in St. Brendan Church, Youngstown, for Robert F. Walsh Jr., 57, of 426 N. Glenellen, who died Sunday morning in St. Elizabeth Health Center of complications from an industrial accident that occurred Dec. 21 at Fabart.
Mr. Walsh was born April 16, 1943, in Youngstown, a son of Robert F. and Mary T. McGovern Walsh.
He was a class-A welder for Fabart for six years and previously worked for Youngstown Welding.
He was a member of the church. He raced his 1956 Chevy, "Plum Crazy," and defeated two national champions at Thompson Drag Speedway. He also worked on the pit crew for Butch Haefke and was a pit man for Kenny Bennett at the Canfield Demolition Derbies.
Besides his mother at home, he leaves three sisters, Patricia J. Walsh of Encinitas, Calif., Laura J. Walsh-Steinman of Fairfax, Va., and Mary Ellen Campana of Canfield; and a brother, Michael J. of Austintown.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Youngstown Foundation or Make-a-Wish Foundation in memory of Champ McGahagan.
