HOWLAND -- Police are saying little about an infant found dead at a township home over the weekend.
Police Chief Steve Lamantia said investigators did not want to give out much information until officials have had time to speak to family members. Officials said they don't know the cause of death.
According to Trumbull County 911 records, Anthony B. Lentine Jr., 8311 Brookwood Drive N.E., called the center at 5:16 p.m. Saturday asking to talk to the township police chief. Because the chief was not working Saturday, the call was given to another township officer, reports state.
At 5:24 p.m. that officer asked that the Trumbull County coroner be called. The 911 log sheets state the call was a "possible child found dead."
Baby found: Officials confirmed Monday that the man told police officers he believed a dead infant was inside a garbage bag in his home.
Officials said the man was cleaning his house when he found a garbage bag in one of his closets. Officials said the infant was found inside the bag.
Police declined to say how many people lived in the home.
"We are still reviewing all the evidence and cannot comment on it at this time," Lamantia said. He noted that no police reports were available.
Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk, a forensic pathologist with the Trumbull County Coroner's Office, autopsied the infant this weekend. A spokeswoman with the coroner's office said the results are pending and all information is to be released through the police department.
Police officials said they believe the baby, which was badly decomposed, had been in the bag for about a year. They couldn't determine its gender or age.
