YSU FOOTBALL Penguin Club to honor Jim Tressel on May 24



Proceeds will help fund an inner-city scholarship at Youngstown State.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State University Penguin Club, in conjunction with the athletic department, will sponsor a tribute dinner for former YSU football coach and athletic director Jim Tressel May 24 at Mr. Anthony's in Boardman.
"This event will provide a fitting venue to honor Coach Tressel, not only for his contributions to our football program and university, but for all his efforts as one of our valley's finest ambassadors," YSU Director of University Development Paul McFadden said.
The proceeds of the tribute dinner will help fund an inner-city scholarship at Youngstown State.
The evening's program will feature Tressel, the head coach at The Ohio State University, along with former Penguin players that were members of the four national championship teams.
Cooached 15 years: Tressel spent 15 years as the head football coach at YSU and was the executive associate director of athletics for six years.
While at YSU, he had a record of 135-57-2 and led the Penguins to 10 appearances in the NCAA Div. I-AA playoffs.
The Penguins won national championships in 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1997 and also played in the title game in 1992 and 1999.
In Tressel's tenure, YSU had 12 winning seasons, seven 10-plus win seasons and a winning percentage of .702. He was a six-time Ohio College Coach of the Year, won the Eddie Robinson Coach-of-the-Year Award and was the Division I-AA National Coach of the Year in 1993, 1994 and 1997.
On Jan. 18 Tressel was named the 22nd head football coach in Buckeyes history.
The dinner kicks off at 6:15 p.m. and doors for the event open at 6 p.m. The program to honor Tressel is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the event are $100 for individuals or $800 for a table of eight. Tickets can be purchased by calling the YSU Ticket Office at (330) 742-1YSU.
