Wreath laid at memorial
Gen. Eric K. Shinseki, Army chief of staff, and his Australian Army counterpart, Lt. Gen. Peter Cosgrove, laid a wreath at the Korean War Veterans Memorial on Thursday in Washington, D.C., in honor of the more than 17,000 Australian troops who served during the Korean War.
During the war, 339 Australians were killed, 1,216 were wounded, and 72 are missing in action.
Free health screenings
The Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Butler will provide free health screenings and evaluations for veterans from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the center, 325 New Castle Road, Butler.
The medical center's mobile outreach team will provide the same services from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 10 at VFW Post 3374, Greenville, and April 12 at American Legion Post 343, New Castle. Veterans are asked to bring their discharge papers (form DD 214).
Membership drive
The 82nd Airborne Division Association, Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway Chapter, Dayton, is conducting its annual membership drive. People who served in any Army Airborne unit are eligible to join, and if interested, should contact Airborne Today, 5459 Northcutt Place, Dayton, Ohio 45414-3742.

Finished with basic
Three area residents completed basic military training in the Army.
They are: Pvt. Daniel M. Bottenfield Jr. (Sharon High School '00), at Fort Sill, Okla. He is a son of Deidre A. Bottenfield of Wengler Avenue, Sharon, and Daniel M. Bottenfield Sr., Hubbard.
Pvt. George K. Tunison, son of Richard C. Tunison, 41 S. Marcia Drive, Austintown, at Fort Knox, Ky.
Pvt. Joseph M. Allen (Warren G. Harding High School '99), at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He is a son of Victoria Williamson, 924 Highland S.W., Warren.
PROMOTIONS
UAir Force Major Thomas D. Miokovic, a son of Lois Lunich, Homestead Avenue, Youngstown, was promoted to his present rank while assigned as a support flight commander with the 711th Air Force Recruiting Squadron, Canonsburg, Pa.
UAir Force Technical Sgt. John E. Golloway Jr., a son of John E. and Phyllis Golloway, Four Winds Court, Niles, was promoted to his present rank while assigned as a weapons system evaluation program expediter with the 83rd Fighter Weapons Squadron, Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.
HONORS
Soldier of the Year
Army Specialist James A. Haverstock, a son of Mark S. and Deborah K. Haverstock, Youngstown, was named 2000 Soldier of the Year for Troop 5, 15th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Knox, Ky. He is a cavalry scout.
