CANFIELD Kids showing animals at fair must attend training sessions

CANFIELD -- Children who want to show animals at the Canfield Fair this year are advised to show up at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center on March 31.
For the second straight year, the Ohio Department of Agriculture is requiring youth exhibitors and guardians to attend training sessions on raising high-quality animals, said Velma Glista, a member of the market livestock committee for the junior fair.
When, where: The training will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mahoning County Livestock Expo at the center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road.
Children, accompanied by at least one guardian, must arrive before noon to attend the three sessions required for certification, Glista said.
Topics for sessions will include nutrition, livestock safety, meat and dairy inspection and record keeping.
Sponsors: The event is sponsored by the Mahoning County Agricultural Society, the Mahoning County Farm Bureau and the market livestock committee.
"There is more to raising an animal than just feeding it and selling it and making a $5 profit," Glista said.
A second set of sessions will be in June for college students and others unable to attend the March 31 session, she said.
