BENJAMIN F. DEMATHEWS, 79 Was contractor and real estate developer



NILES -- Services will be Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Joseph Rossi Funeral Home and at 9:30 in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church for Benjamin F. DeMathews, 79, of 1443 Shaw Ave., who died Friday in Glenn View Manor.
Mr. DeMathews, known as "Ace," was born March 31, 1921, in Warren, a son of Henry and Theresa Bassett DeMathews.
He was a contractor for 50 years, expanding DeMathews Construction Co., started by his father in 1921, and a real estate developer.
He was a 1938 graduate and class president of McKinley High School.
He was a member of the church, Niles Moose Lodge, Kentucky Colonels, and the Teamsters and Operating Engineers unions.
He was a sergeant in the Marines, serving two tours in the Pacific during World War II.
He leaves his wife, the former Lola M. Macali, whom he married Oct. 4, 1947; two sons, David H. of Los Angeles, and Michael of Howland; a daughter, Valerie A. of Columbus; a sister, Loretta Salerno of Niles; and a grandchild.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
