AROUND THE NHL Saturday's other games

Flyers 2, Rangers 1
PHILADELPHIA -- Goaltender Roman Cechmanek got standing ovations for his play, and Dan McGillis scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the New York Rangers. Kent Manderville also scored for Philadelphia, which has won five of six games. The Rangers, who got a goal from Radek Dvorak, fell to 1-6-1 this month.
Kings 1, Sharks 0, OT
LOS ANGELES -- Bryan Smolinski scored 40 seconds into overtime and Felix Potvin earned his 16th career shutout in the Los Angeles Kings' victory over San Jose. Smolinski got a lead pass from Glen Murray, stickhandled around defenseman Mike Rathje and beat rookie goalie Evgeni Nabokov with a 20-footer to the stick side for his 24th goal.
Avalanche 5, Red Wings 3
DENVER -- Shjon Podein and Ray Bourque scored goals in the final 2:27, and the Colorado Avalanche held off the Detroit Red Wings in a matchup of the NHL's two best teams. Colorado extended its lead over Detroit to six points (103-97) in the race for the league's top record and home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.
Predators 4, Coyotes 1
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Mike Dunham made 30 saves and Patric Kjellberg finished with a goal and an assist as the Nashville Predators beat the Phoenix Coyotes. Scott Walker opened the scoring for the Predators at 9:25 of the first period. Walker took a pass from David Legwand and beat Phoenix goalie Robert Esche with a shot from the right circle.
Sabres 3, Capitals 2
WASHINGTON -- Martin Biron stopped 42 shots in a rare start and Chris Gratton scored the tiebreaking goal with 10:34 left as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the reeling Washington Capita. Coming off consecutive shutout losses at home, the Capitals endured a scoreless first period before Peter Bondra ended the dry spell with the first of his two second-period goals. But that was the extent of the Washington offense against Biron.
Bruins 3, Canadiens 2
MONTREAL -- Sergei Samsonov scored two first-period goals and Eric Weinrich added a power-play goal against his former team as the Boston Bruins beat the Montreal Canadiens. Boston moved within one point of idle Carolina in the race for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Bill Guerin had two assists for Boston, which outshot the Canadiens 15-3 in the first period and 33-16 overall.
Maple Leafs 5, Panthers 3
SUNRISE, Fla. -- Aki Berg's first goal of the season was the game-winner as the Toronto Maple Leafs overcame a hat trick by Florida's Pavel Bure and beat the Panthers. Bure earned his fourth hat trick of the season and the 19th of his career. He raised his league-leading goal total to 54 and has either scored or assisted on 11 of Florida's last 12 goals.
