JAMES A. DUVALL, 69 Retired as Youngstown police sergeant



YOUNGSTOWN -- Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, in Austintown, and at 1:30 p.m. in St. Columba Cathedral for James A. Duvall, 69, of 454 N. Schenley Ave., who died Thursday afternoon of congestive heart failure in St. Elizabeth Health Center after a long illness.
Mr. Duvall was born Feb. 6, 1932, in Shippingport, Pa., a son of James A. and Mary R. Lonkert Duvall.
He was a sergeant for the Youngstown City Police Department, where he served for 30 years, retiring in 1986. He received commendations from the city of Youngstown in 1960, 1961, 1963, 1965 and 1969 for exemplary service and was promoted to sergeant in 1974.
After his retirement, he was recognized by the Safety Council of Northeastern Ohio for his volunteer public service auto safety announcements on radio and television and became known as "the voice of safety."
Also, the police department named Mr. Duvall to head a new crime prevention program for the city's elderly shut-ins, called the Golden Alert Program, and he also helped with the department's newsletter for seniors, the Golden Gazette.
He was a member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28 and St. Columba Cathedral, where he was past president of the Parish Council. He graduated in 1951 from South High School and served in the Navy Reserve.
He leaves his wife, the former Ann Gartland, whom he married April 7, 1956; a son, James J. of Youngstown; two sisters, Mary Thomas of El Cajon, Calif., and Patricia Moody of Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, Frank of Palmdale, Calif.; and a granddaughter.
A brother, Richard, is deceased.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
