DANIEL J. MIRTO, 75 Chairman of Rhiel Supply Co., was a community leader



CANFIELD -- Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Trinity United Methodist Church, Youngstown, for Daniel J. Mirto, 75, of 3894 Fairway Drive, chairman of the board of Rhiel Supply Co., who died Saturday in JFK Medical Center, Atlantis, Fla.
Mr. Mirto was born Feb. 10, 1926, in Youngstown, a son of Tobia and Rose Novello Mirto.
A graduate of The Rayen School, he received a degree in accounting and business administration from Youngstown College and owned an accounting firm before becoming vice president and general manager of Rhiel Supply Co. in 1956. He was named president and general manager in 1969 and later became chairman of the board.
He also was president of the American Cleaning Equipment Co. in Cleveland and the Professional Maintenance Co. in Youngstown and Painesville.
He was named president of Youngstown chapter of Public Accountants Society in 1951 and president of the Organization of Protestant Men in 1959, who named him "Protestant Man of the Year" in 1963.
He was also president of the Optimist and Rotary clubs of Austintown. He was treasurer and member of the board of directors of Florence Crittenton Home of Youngstown.
He was chairman of the membership drive for YMCA in 1964, a member of its Businessmen's Club, chairman of its expansion drive in 1969 and was named its president in 1980. He was also co-chairman of its Family Branch Drive, which has been working on plans for a new family center in the Boardman area.
He was chairman of the membership committee of the Youngstown Playhouse, and was a member of Al Koran Shrine, Elks, 4-Square Club and Tippecanoe Country Club.
He was elected president of Youngstown Area Council of Churches for two terms and chairman of the Mahoning County Unit of the American Cancer Society. He was chairman of its fund-raising crusade in 1979.
He was chairman of the general advisory committee of Mahoning County Joint Vocational School in 1972, member of the board of directors for First Federal Savings & amp; Loan of Youngstown, Serex Corp. and Parkview Counseling Center He was director of the Youngstown Chamber of Commerce in 1981.
He was vice president/president-elect of the International Sanitary Supply Association from 1986-88 and was elected national banquet chairman for the City of Hope humanitarian banquet in 1980. He received the City of Hope's "Spirit of Life" award for community service in 1985.
He was honored as "Man of the Year" at Trinity United Methodist Church in 1960, where he was Sunday school superintendent. He also was a member of Youngstown District Methodist Board. He was honored by Eagles Lodge 213 as "Outstanding Humanitarian" in 1969 and received the Frank Purnell Award from Youngstown Area Jaycees in 1983.
Besides his wife, the former Nancy J. Fithian, whom he married Aug. 4, 1951, he leaves three sons, Skip, Toby and J.D., all of Canfield; a daughter, Kim Cole of Beavercreek, Ohio; two brothers, Art of Youngstown and Larry of Howland; a sister, Phyllis Fortunato of Sebring; and 11 grandchildren.
A grandchild is deceased.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Davis Funeral Home, where the 4-Square Club will have a service a 7 p.m. Friends also may call one hour before services in the church.
