YOUNGSTOWN -- After dog wardens and the county humane agent tried to capture wild dogs on the East Side on Monday morning, police shot two of the six to nine dogs they saw.
Neighbors on Penn Avenue complained that dogs had bitten three people and wouldn't let residents out of their homes.
A shepherd-collie mix was killed on Hine Street and a chow mix was shot on Penn.
Two other dogs were wounded and ran off.

YOUNGSTOWN -- A 19-year-old Youngstown State University football player who had his jaw broken March 4 during a fight at a party told police Monday he has since received threatening messages by computer.
One message says a cinder block will be used to hurt him next time and asks how his jaw feels.
Another message says that both his legs will be broken and that his family will need a closed coffin. YSU police are investigating.
Canfield burglary
CANFIELD -- A burglar smashed his way through two doors into a Crory Road home and left with a $370 chain saw and a $500 gold watch, reports say.
The break-in was reported to the sheriff's department after the homeowner pulled into his garage and found the damage.
Union endorsement
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Police Department's patrolmen's union has endorsed Anthony J. Farris in his bid for a seat on the Youngstown Municipal Court.
Farris, an assistant city prosecutor, is running for the seat held by Judge Robert A. Douglas.
"Atty. Farris has displayed the knowledge, ability and professionalism that is required to efficiently serve the public and administer justice fairly and equitably," wrote Patrolman Barry L. Ervin, union president.
Reminding parentsto get kids immunized
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- There are still about 50 schoolchildren in the New Castle School District who are not completely immunized. Assistant Superintendent Nick DeRosa said letters will be sent to parents informing them of the specific immunizations needed.
State law requires all children to be immunized by April 30 or they will not be permitted to attend school, he said. Most of the children needing immunizations are in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades, he said.
Welfare fraud charge
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A West Lincoln Avenue man is accused of welfare fraud in the taking of state subsidized child care assistance money while not being employed. A preliminary hearing for Bruce Davis, 37, is planned for April 20 before District Justice Melissa Amodie. An investigation by the Pennsylvania Office of Inspector General found that Davis collected $1,392 in state subsidized child care assistance while he was incarcerated from June 14, 2000, to Nov. 3, 2000. State subsidized day care is paid only to people who are employed.
New Castle house fire
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Firefighters say they suspect a Beckford Street home was burning for at least an hour before they were called at 12:30 p.m. Monday. No one was home when faulty electrical wiring ignited in the basement, said fire Chief James Donston. He estimates there was about $30,000 worth of damage to the home, owned by Marty Panella. Donston said the blaze traveled through the home's heating ducts up to the first and second floors before it was contained. The American Red Cross was called to assist Panella.
