YOUNGSTOWN Man hit during chase dies while in hospital

The Canton man has been charged with three crimes in Boardman.
YOUNGSTOWN -- There is no word from area prosecutors as to whether Steven Mango will face additional charges in the traffic death of a Struthers man.
Phillip Swantner, 34, of 83 Harvey St., died Saturday in St. Elizabeth Health Center. He was admitted Feb. 16.
The accident: Police said Swantner was driving in the Youngstown-Poland Road and Midlothian Boulevard area on the afternoon of Feb. 16. At about the same time, Mango, 30, of Canton, who police say had just committed a series of robberies in Boardman, was fleeing officers east on Midlothian Boulevard.
Boardman police said Mango was the suspect in a robbery at Yankee Kitchen Restaurant, 6635 Market St.
Police said the chase began when Mango failed to stop and eventually headed to Midlothian Boulevard in Youngstown. Reports say Mango turned against a red light north onto Youngstown-Poland Road, striking two cars -- one of which was driven by Swantner.
Mango has since been arraigned in Boardman area court on two counts of felony robbery and misdemeanor theft. At a preliminary hearing Feb. 26, the felony charges were bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury. No hearing date has been set for the misdemeanor charge, the county court said.
Boardman police say Mango also robbed the Dairy Mart on Lockwood Boulevard and took a small amount of money from a cash register at the Perkins Restaurant on Boardman-Poland Road. Both crimes occurred before the Yankee Kitchen robbery.
Judge Joseph Houser of Mahoning County Area Court, Boardman, set bond at $1,500 for the misdemeanor theft and $50,000 for each felony. Mango remains in the Mahoning County Jail.
In Youngstown Municipal Court, Mango faces charges of reckless operation, no proof of insurance and failure to obey a traffic device. Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly set bond at $1,500.
