LIBRARY SCIENCE
SALEM -- Scott Shafer, a Salem native, has been appointed director and clerk-treasurer of the Lima Public Library in Lima, Ohio. Shafer earned a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in library science, both from Kent State University. He came to Lima in 1989 from the Wellsville Carnegie Public Library in Wellsville, where he was director. He had been assistant director of the Lima library since 1993. He lives in Lima.
HEALTH CARE
AUSTINTOWN -- Emil Dickstein, M.D., has joined the staff of Briarfield Health Care Centers as medical director of Briarfield Manor, Austintown. Nicholas DePizzo, D.O., and Nicholas DePizzo II, D.O., have joined the company as medical directors of Ashley Circle, also in Austintown.
Dickstein is a graduate of the University of California Berkeley, and the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University. He is in private practice in Austintown with the Trumbull Mahoning Medical Group and is an associate professor of medicine and chairman of the General Internal Medicine Department and Division of History of Medicine at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
The DePizzos are in private practice on Belmont Avenue in Youngstown. The senior Dr. DePizzo graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is on staff at Forum Health and St. Elizabeth Health Center. DePizzo II is a graduate of Youngstown State University and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He recently completed his internship and residency at St. Joseph's Health Center in Warren and is on staff at Forum Health.
FARRELL -- Dr. Thomas M. Layton of Hermitage has been named interim vice president for medical affairs at UPMC Horizon with primary responsibilities at the Shenango Valley facility. He assumes the duties of Dr. Frederick Uberti who is on medical leave. He is
board certified in psychiatry and sleep medicine and currently serves as UPMC Horizon's director of quality improvement and medical director of its Regional Center for Sleep Disorders. He is a
graduate of LeMoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y., and earned his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He joined UPMC Horizon in 1990.
BANKING
GIRARD -- Peter Duran has been named vice president and senior business banking officer in the Mahoning Valley for Charter One Bank. Duran will be based at the bank's Girard office. Duran worked for Key Bank and Fifth Third Bank before joining Charter One and has a bachelor's degree from Florida Southern College. He lives in Canfield.
SALEM -- Consumers National Bank has appointed Audrey Null as manager of its Salem office. A Salem native, Null had been manager of the bank's East Canton office. She is a graduate of Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, and has more than 13 years of financial industry experience, the last eight with Consumers. She lives in Salem.
EMERGENCY SERVICES
YOUNGSTOWN -- Pellin Emergency Medical Service has appointed Richard Pellin Jr. director of the Youngstown EMS Division. Pellin, a graduate of Hiram College with a bachelor's degree in management and accounting, previously served as director of communications and director of customer services for the division. He is certified as an Intermediate Emergency Medical Technician and Firefighter, is fire chief of the Milton Township Fire Department and is president-elect of Northeastern Ohio Medical Services Council.
MANUFACTURING
YOUNGSTOWN -- Scott Bass, a Youngstown native, has been elected vice president of VPI, LLC, a Sheboygan, Wis.. company which operates manufacturing plants in Wisconsin, Delaware and Maryland. Bass will also continue to serve as general manager of the company's contract manufacturing division. A Chaney High School graduate, Bass has a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Youngstown State University and joined VPI in 1995. He lives in Sheboygan.
CULINARY ARTS
NILES -- Stephen James Horvat of Canfield, a recent graduate of the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts, has been hired as a chef at Alberini's Restaurant in Niles. An Ursuline High School graduate, Horvat earned an associate degree in specialized technology, culinary arts, and is a certified culinarian. He also did his internship at Alberini's.
