JAMES J. McNICHOLAS, 76



YOUNGSTOWN -- Services will be at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at McVean & amp; Hughes Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. in St. Edward Church for James J. McNicholas, 76, of 1830 Fifth Ave., who died Tuesday afternoon in St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Mr. McNicholas was born Jan. 29, 1925, in Youngstown, a son of James J. and Mary T. Casey McNicholas, and was a lifelong area resident.
He was a 1943 graduate of Ursuline High School and attended Youngstown College. He was vice president of labor relations for McNicholas Transportation Co., starting with the company in 1938 and retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the church and coached its basketball team. He also was a member of the American Transportation Labor Commission, OSC Association Youngstown Transfer Club, the North Hills Golf League, Knights of Columbus, Steel Valley and National P.O.W. organizations and the Confederate Air Force.
Mr. McNicholas was on the committee for the UHS Class of 1943 reunion and was a former member and house chairman of Tippecanoe Country Club. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving with the 8th Air Force, 96th Bomber Group. On Oct. 7, 1944, he was shot down over Leipzig, Germany, and was a P.O.W. until the end of the war. He received the Purple Heart.
Besides his wife, the former Sally A. Tinkler, whom he married Oct. 6, 1945, he leaves six sons, James and Michael, both of Youngstown, Brian of Stow, Casey of Twin Lakes, Ohio, Patrick of Hopkinton, N.H., and Terrence of Detroit, Mich.; three daughters, Jane McNicholas of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mary Beth McNicholas of Hopkinton and Molly Emery of Stow; three sisters, Kathryn O'Hara, Florence O'Connor and Marion Kosinski, all of Youngstown; and 23 grandchildren, including Dawn and Kurt Barger of Youngstown, whom he reared. A daughter, Sally Barger, and a grandchild, are deceased.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
