MAHONING COUNTY Commissioners meeting to feature YSU president

Commissioners plan to work with other leaders to forge progress in the county.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County commissioners are forming partnerships for progress with other community leaders, starting with Dr. David Sweet, president of Youngstown State University.
Sweet was to be a guest at the commissioners' meeting today to talk about ways YSU and the county can work together for progress in the Mahoning Valley.
It's part of Commissioner Vicki Allen Sherlock's plan to use board meetings as a forum to interact with business, labor, education, civil and religious leaders.
"My overall goal is to redefine the role of county commissioners," said Sherlock, president of the board this year. "I think it's the right time to do that."
Sherlock said she wants Sweet to talk about issues including downtown revitalization and ways that the county and university can cooperatively boost job opportunities for the county's low-income families.
Plans: She intends to have other community leaders speak at future meetings, addressing topics of work force development, childcare for working families and other pertinent issues.
"It's just a matter of working together to identify needs within our community and address them. We are all intertwined in our mission," Sherlock said.
