JUDGE JOSEPH EDWARD MAHONEY, 77 Retired from 11th District appeals court



ASHTABULA -- Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mother of Sorrows Church, Ashtabula, for retired 11th District Court of Appeals Judge Joseph Edward Mahoney, 77, of Lake Road West, who died Tuesday in University Hospitals of Cleveland.
Judge Mahoney was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Ashtabula, a son of John P. and Teresa Monaghan Mahoney, and was a lifelong area resident.
After practicing law in Ashtabula for one year, he attended the FBI Academy and became a special agent, later serving as director of investigation for Philadelphia. He returned to Ashtabula in 1961 and formed a partnership with his brother and was Ashtabula County Prosecutor from 1965 through 1968.
He retired in 1997 from the 11th Ohio District Court of Appeals to which he was appointed in 1989 and was a visiting judge until his death. He was previously Ashtabula County Common Pleas Judge for 20 years.
"He leaves a legacy of compassion, courage and personal warmth which will never be surpassed," said 11th District Court Presiding Judge William M. O'Neill, who served as Judge Mahoney's law clerk in the 1970s.
A 1941 graduate of Ashtabula Harbor High School, Judge Mahoney received his bachelor's degree in commerce in 1948 and his law degree in 1949, both from Notre Dame University. He was a World War II Marine Corps and Navy veteran.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge 208, American Legion Dewey Howlett Post, VFW Post 943 and was a member of AARP since 1980. He was also a member of Ashtabula County and Ohio State Bar associations, Ashtabula County Farm Bureau, Italian Sons & amp; Daughters of America and University of Notre Dame Club of Cleveland.
His first wife, the former Clare McLaughlin, died in 1980.
Besides his wife, the former Christina Pedro, whom he married Dec. 4, 1982, he leaves three sons, Joseph E. Jr. of Plantation, Fla., Timothy J. of Lake Zurich, Ill., and Francis X. of Fremont, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Susan Rockhill and Renee M. Meola, both of Ashtabula; two brothers, John P. Jr. of Conneaut and William F. of Toledo; a sister, Margaret M. Cragon of Ashtabula; and 11 grandchildren.
Two brothers, Robert E. and Thomas J., are deceased.
Friends may call from 1 to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Ducro Funeral Home, Ashtabula, where the Elks will have a service at 9 p.m.
