DIALYSIS CASE
At a glance
A look back at the events involving the Physicians Dialysis Center of Youngstown.
Twenty patients became ill after receiving dialysis treatments at the center Aug. 30, 2000. The patients complained of chills, fever and nausea.
One patient, 57-year-old Lawrence Lingo of Newton Falls, died the same day. A second patient, Evelyn Payne, 60, of Youngstown, died in October.
The center closed immediately because of the sicknesses and reopened Oct. 4.
Among improvements made during the shutdown was installation of 29 new dialysis machines.
The Youngstown Board of Health requires the center to take weekly water samples to ensure that bacteria and chemical levels remain at acceptable levels.
