CHAMPION -- Township trustees plan to begin their new road improvement project in April.
Trustees said that a safety upgrade of Craig Avenue will start April 16 at a cost of $204,900, of which the township will pay $63,500. Trustees said new curbs also will be added.
The majority of the funding is made possible with state Issue 2 money.
Trustees said they expect the township road resurfacing program to start by late summer. These roads are scheduled for resurfacing: Myrtle, Woodrow, Hiram, Lauder, Damon, Eldon, Shirley, Sarah, Verona, Vesey, and Clearview.
The township also has a joint project with Trumbull County Engineer's Office to replace the culvert at Copeland and Champion avenues. The total cost will be $194,400, with the township's 61 percent share ($118,584), to come from its road and bridge fund.
Other issues: In other matters, zoning inspector John Ghindia reported that the Post House in Parkman will open a new restaurant May 1 in Champion at the former G.B. Brown's restaurant on Mahoning Avenue.
Rhonda Fonce, assistant zoning inspector, said she is sending 27 letters to people who didn't comply with a previous notice asking them to remove their junk cars from their properties.
Fonce said the owners will have 30 days to remove the cars or they will be cited into court.
Trustees accepted the resignation of Mark Jeffers from the zoning appeals board. Jeffers is moving to Michigan. They appointed Russell Banks to replace him. Trustees also appointed Timothy Fraelich to the township zoning commission to replace Steve Millick, who resigned in December.
Trustees will have a public hearing for proposed streetlighting for Emerson Street at 5:30 p.m. April 2 at the township building.
