2 officers suspended for firing guns
COLUMBIANA -- Police have suspended two volunteer auxiliary police officers after they admitted firing guns on private property Feb. 24 after their return from a Youngstown bar.
Chief John Krawchyk said Brian Westerburg and Jarrod Richter told him of the episode Feb. 27.
"They both came in, they both told me there was no reason for it, and it was a very stupid thing to do," Krawchyk said. "Somebody could have been hurt, but nobody was."
Westerburg turned in his auxiliary equipment and resigned, and Richter remains on suspension, Krawchyk said. The men chose not to file charges against each other.
"They're friends and they spent the rest of the weekend together," Krawchyk said.
Krawchyk said he notified Columbiana County Sheriff Dave Smith of the episode since it occurred on Richter's wooded property about a half-mile off state Route 154 in Elkton.
He said the sheriff's department investigated but no charges were filed.
