Lawmakers to discusssteel crisis with union
WARREN -- Area lawmakers and representatives of the United Steelworkers of America will discuss Wednesday the domestic steel industry crisis.
The meeting is at 5:30 p.m. in city council chambers, 141 South Street S.E.
Trumbull County commissioners and elected officials from other communities have been invited.
Stolen from house
CANFIELD -- A burglar broke into a house in the 8000 block of Palmyra Road sometime Monday morning and stole a stereo system and speaker worth $480; a gold necklace valued at $200; a camera worth $250; $75 in coins and a child's lamp worth $10.
The Mahoning County Sheriff's Department said the burglar entered after breaking a small window and unlocking a side door.
Robbed at home
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Quinn Street woman asleep on a couch at 12:10 a.m. today woke to find two men with guns in her living room.
The 21-year-old woman told police she was hit on the head with a gun, choked and robbed of 18 gold rings, four gold necklaces and $90.
The robbers left in a burgundy Chevrolet with two other men.
Beaten by intruders
CAMPBELL -- A Reed Avenue man was beaten on the head with a candlestick in his home Sunday by four men, one of whom had a gun.
The intruders left with a 25-inch TV, a CD and VCR player and an entertainment center.
Police said they hauled the items away in a blue Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck with tinted windows.
The man told police he owed the men $40.
Warren man arraignedon multiple charges
BOARDMAN -- A Warren man who held police from several departments at bay for two hours Thursday at a hotel in North Lima was arraigned in Mahoning County Area Court here.
Daniel A. Mavroudis, 38, who gave a East King Street address, pleaded innocent to charges of burglary, receiving stolen property, fleeing and eluding, forgery, passing bad checks, speeding, not having a valid driver's license, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless operation.
He is being held on $21,000 bond.
Cruiser hit by rock
AUSTINTOWN -- A township police car was hit by a large rock Sunday morning as it sat in front of the D.A.R.E. officer's home.
Reports said the light bar on top of the 1999 Chevrolet was damaged and the driver's side windows were broken.
Burglaries reported
AUSTINTOWN -- Burglars forced open doors to three homes on Winthrop Drive over the weekend, ransacking bedrooms and stealing several hundred dollars' worth of necklaces, rings and watches.
Employee charged
NILES -- An employee of a retirement home has been arrested.
Julia Ann Farmer, 31, of Ridge Road, Cortland, is free on $250 bond. She is charged with drug possession and criminal trespassing.
Police said Farmer, who worked at Autumn Hills Care Center, Niles-Vienna Road, is accused of possessing prescription drugs from the facility last month.
The criminal trespassing charge was filed because Farmer, who is nine months pregnant, was on sick leave from the center when she was found with the drugs and wasn't authorized to be on the property, police said.
Robberies investigated
WEATHERSFIELD -- Police are investigating two robberies.
Two men walked into the Marathon gas station on state Route 46 about 7 p.m. Saturday. One bought a bag of potato chips and when the clerk opened the cash register for change, the other man pointed a gun at her and grabbed about $100.
A man went into the Coates Car Care, Youngstown-Warren Road, about 12:15 a.m. Monday, bought a bottle of pop and when the clerk opened the cash register, the man pushed the clerk aside and took an undetermined amount of cash.
