JOSEPH J. PHILLIPS, 83
YOUNGSTOWN -- Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Randall & amp; Roberts Funeral Home, Noblesville, Ind., for Joseph J. Phillips, 83, of Noblesville, formerly of Kokomo, Ind., and Youngstown, who died Sunday in Riverwalk Village, Noblesville.
Mr. Phillips was born April 13, 1917, in Youngstown, a son of James and Erminia Bellino Phillip.
He was a 37-year executive for Kokomo's Haynes Satellite Company. He did research at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus from 1942 to 1953, which involved research on the atomic bomb during World War II. He was a technical writing editor and patent engineer for Union Carbide in Kokomo from 1953 to 1970 and became patent agent for the legal division of Cabot Corp., which later became Haynes, where he was responsible for licensing more than 160 patents.
He was a member of Kokomo Creative Arts Council from 1966 to 1976, a member of Sagamore Council of Boy Scouts of America, chairman of the Explorer Council in 1974 and was recognized for his work by the U.S. Office of Science Research and Development of Effective Science.
He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of Metals, Kokomo Engineering Society, Society for Technical Writers and Editors, Specialty Librarian Association and the Ohio State University Alumni Association. He also was historian for the Elwood Haynes Museum in Kokomo, Ind.
Besides his wife, the former Josephine E. Molli, whom he married March 11, 1939, he leaves three sons, Joseph Jr. of Fairfield, Ohio, Louis of Noblesville and Michael of Lake Worth, Fla.; a daughter, Cris Phillips of Carlsbad, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and one hour before the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
