Veterans' diplomas
Veterans' diplomas
McDONALD -- The board of education has approved high school diplomas for two World War II veterans whose military duty prevented them from finishing high school.
The recipients are Albert F. Wilkes Jr., 208 S. Roanoke Avenue, Austintown, who has requested that his diploma be awarded for the year 1944, and Michael Joseph Rosemont, 2239 Renwick Drive, Poland, who would have graduated in 1946.
The wife of a third recipient, the late William H. Flickinger Jr., will be awarded his diploma.
A presentation ceremony is being planned.
Crossing-guard class
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield School District will offer a crossing-guard class for Mineral Ridge residents from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday in the middle school library.
Volunteer crossing guards are used to escort pupils across state Route 46 in the mornings and after classes on school days.
Dog tags, adoption
WARREN -- The Trumbull County auditor's office has sold more than 60 dog tags over the Internet since its adopt-a-dog Web site went live last week.
The site, accessible from www.co.auditor.trumbull.oh.us or www.dogtagsplus.com, also features photographs of dogs available for adoption at the county pound.
One animal pictured on the site has already been adopted, officials say.
Residents also may post pictures and descriptions of lost dogs or view a list of locations where dog tags are sold.
There is an additional charge of $2 for dog tags sold online.
Body found in river
STRUTHERS -- The Mahoning County coroner is expected to perform an autopsy Monday on the body of a white male found floating in the Mahoning River.
Struthers police would not identify the deceased man until his family was notified. Police also said the man's body was unmarked and that they couldn't determine the cause of death.
A Struthers resident called police about 2:30 p.m. Saturday and said the man's body was in a shallow area of the river about 200 yards west of the South Bridge Street bridge. The body had become grounded on the bottom of the river, and a portion was visible.
The dead man was wearing only shoes.
The sheriff's department dive team and the Struthers fire department helped recover the body about 4:40 p.m.
