Sleeping in the road
COITSVILLE -- A 17-year-old Hubbard boy found sleeping in the southbound lane of North Hubbard Road about 2 a.m. Saturday was charged with underage consumption. The boy was released to his mother.
The boy, who lives on Chestnut Ridge Avenue, told township police that he'd had a few beers at home, then went to a friend's house on North Hubbard Road to spend the evening after the Hubbard football game.
The teen-ager couldn't explain how he ended up on the road, police said.
Suspects in robbery
AUSTINTOWN -- Township police have two suspects in an armed robbery at 11:51 p.m. Friday at Brier Hill Pizza Shop, 50 S. Meridian Road. A worker said two men in dark clothes with masks had handguns and took about $3,500 from the cash register and office. Police questioned the men after a tip from a Mahoning County deputy sheriff that the pair matched the description of the robbers.
W. Nile virus suspected
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Clarencedale Avenue resident who had found a dead crow in his rear yard called police around 11:30 p.m. Monday and the officers, concerned about the deadly West Nile virus, placed the bird in a recycling bin. The officers placed a rock on top of the crow to prevent animals from feeding on the carcass. The officers noted that the bird showed no signs of injury to account for its death. The South Side resident told police that he found the crow at 6:30 p.m. and tried to call the city health department, but got no response.
Youths held in break-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- The side door of a Clarencedale Avenue house appeared kicked in to the owner who found three Boardman High School students in the kitchen when he returned to the South Side residence around 7:15 p.m. Monday. The man held the boys and called police, who took the teen-agers to the juvenile justice center. Two of the boys, both 15, from Southern Boulevard and Stanton Avenue, respectively, face charges of breaking and entering. The third boy, 14, of Shadyside Drive had two bags of marijuana and rolling papers in his pocket, police said. Officers charged him with breaking and entering, drug-abuse marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The Clarencedale homeowner told police that he found pipes cut in the basement and the water heater moved as though it were going to be taken.
Children found alone
AUSTINTOWN -- Police said a driver found a 16-month-old boy walking on the 100 block of North Raccoon Road, and found a 2-year-old girl on the porch of her nearby home, at 2:46 a.m. Sunday.
The mother returned home a short time later and told authorities she had gone to the store and post office. Police said they told the mother she may face child endangerment charges.
Girard man assaulted
ELLSWORTH -- A Girard man told Mahoning County deputy sheriffs that he was assaulted by several men in a trailer at the Mahoning County Coon Hunter's Club on Elk Road.
The man, who was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center, told deputies that he was sitting in his trailer late Sunday night when several men came in and began punching him in the head. He could not identify the men.
The man had a cut above his ear and a swollen eye socket.
Trimmer, mower stolen
GREENFORD -- A grass trimmer and a lawn mower have been stolen from a shed behind Greenford Lutheran Church on West South Range Road.
The tools are worth $600. A member of the church council told Mahoning County deputy sheriffs that he discovered the tools were missing Friday morning. The lock on the shed had been cut and the shed door was open, he said.
