RUNNERS OPEN AT MIAMI



OXFORD -- The Youngstown State cross country teams opened their seasons at the Miami Classic.
Will Edwards placed 12th in 27 minutes, 5 seconds, helping the YSU men's team place fourth in the field of nine teams.
Sophomore Paul Robinette (Hubbard) finished 18th (27:22) and Tim Tatarka (Austintown) was 34th (28:10).
The women's team finished fifth out of 10 schools. Emily Schnitkey placed 13th (19:19) and Jen Moore (Girard) finished 43rd (20:22).

Ursuline's Graves named by SVC
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline High junior tailback Terrence Graves was named the Steel Valley Conference player of the week.
The 6-foot, 2-inch, 205-pound Graves rushed 17 times for 263 yards and four touchdowns as the Irish (3-0) defeated Alliance 54-0.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Wilson High senior Anthony Floyd was named City Series player of the week.
He recorded three quarterback sacks, five solo tackles and two hits for negative yardage in the Redmen's 17-0 loss to Poland last Friday.
Reyes helps SU
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Redshirt freshman tailback Walter Reyes (Struthers) had a career-high eight carries for 33 yards against Central Florida Saturday in Syracuse University's 21-10 victory.
He gained 25 yards on five carries during SU's touchdown drive in the third quarter.
Reyes had one carry for 8 yards in the Orangemen's (1-2) loss to Tennessee.

MUC's Snyder named by OAC
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union College sophomore setter Katie Snyder earned volleyball Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors.
Snyder contributed 13 aces, 61 digs (2.9 per game) and 261 assists (12.43 per game) in 21 games this past week. She also posted a .364 hitting percentage.

Graduation rateshold steady
INDIANAPOLIS -- Graduation rates among college athletes held steady in the most recent NCAA figures, but the rate among men's basketball players dropped to its second-lowest level since 1984.
The rates reflect graduation patterns for athletes who entered college in 1994-95.
While graduation rates for all Division I athletes remained at 58 percent -- the same as surveys conducted the last two years by the primary governing body for college sports -- the rate among men's basketball players dropped from 42 percent to 40 percent.
Ex-Steeler Morris gets 10 years
ROCKWALL, Texas -- Bam Morris, the leading rusher in the 1996 Super Bowl for the Pittsburgh Steelers, was sentenced to 10 years in state prison for violating his probation on a 1996 drug conviction.
The violation stems from federal drug-trafficking charges, to which Morris pleaded guilty last year. He was sentenced in June to 30 months in prison.
Potvin re-signswith L.A. Kings
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Felix Potvin, whose goaltending helped the Kings reach the NHL playoffs and kept them going once they got there, has agreed to a one-year contract with Los Angeles, with the club holding an option for a second year.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The U.S. Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be televised live by ABC Sports on Sept. 30.
The race was carried on Speedvision and Fox Sports Net last year, the first time a Formula One race was run in the United States since 1991.
Coach, student stabbed at school
MINNEAPOLIS -- An assistant football coach and a freshman football player were stabbed at a high school Monday when a fight broke out after practice.
The 14-year-old was in serious condition Monday night at Hennepin County Medical Center. Mark Johnson, 45, was listed in stable condition. Police did not immediately release the player's name.
The fight occurred about 6:30 p.m. when the Roosevelt High School team was leaving practice. The student was apparently stabbed in the chest, and the coach was stabbed in the back as he tried to break up the fight.
No arrests were immediately made and no weapons were recovered, police said.
Clemson playerhas broken neck
CLEMSON, S.C. -- Clemson sophomore defensive back Marcus Houskin has a broken neck and will miss the rest of the season.
Houskin was injured in the 19th-ranked Tigers' 38-14 victory over Wofford on Saturday. X-rays taken Monday revealed Houskin, who was making his first career start at free safety, had broken his neck.
