PREVENTION Keeping the bugs at bay

Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers and old tires left outdoors. All of these can harbor enough water for mosquitoes to lay their eggs.
Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers or flower pots left outside.
Turn over plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use.
Clean clogged roof gutters.
Properly chlorinate swimming pools and don't allow water to collect on the swimming pool cover.
Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish.
Change birdbath water to keep it fresh.
Even if the mosquitoes are out there, there are steps people can take to avoid being bit:
Check and repair screen doors and windows.
Avoid going outside, or wear long sleeves, during dusk, down and early evening when the mosquitoes are out.
Stay out of marshy areas or places with heavy underbrush or trees where mosquitoes hang out.
Use insect repellent according to the manufacturer's instructions.
