Photo contest for pets
MONACA, Pa. -- Beaver County Humane Society will sponsor a pet photo contest July 11-13 at the Beaver Valley Mall. The photos will be on display, and the public may cast votes for their favorite photo. Entry deadline is July 13, and photos may be submitted until judging begins at 7 p.m. that night. Prizes in various categories will be awarded in the event, which is a fund-raiser for the society.
Participants may enter in advance by sending their name, address, phone number, pet's name, a photo no larger than 4 inches by 6 inches of their pet and a $5 donation per photo to the Beaver County Humane Society, P.O. Box 63, Monaca, Pa. 15601. A self-addressed, stamped envelope may be enclosed to have the photo returned. Participants may also obtain entry forms by stopping at the shelter or by calling (724) 775-5801.
Annual picnic scheduled

Grants aid learning
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County Conservation District received two new grants to expand its environmental education programs and to compile data on which to base water quality protection projects. A $5,778 grant form the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will pay for training educators in programs designed to help them meet state standards for teaching the environment and ecology. A $10,000 grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development will pay for monitoring water and soil to pinpoint where to focus water protection projects.
Biker stable after crash
BOARDMAN -- A 46-year-old Poland man was in stable condition Saturday in St. Elizabeth Health Center after crashing his motorcycle on Interstate 680. Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers said Robert J. Dimaiolo of North Lima Road was traveling southbound on I-680 between state Route 224 and Midlothian Boulevard at 12:45 a.m. Saturday when he lost control of the motorcycle. Dimaiolo was charged with driving under the influence.
Party to ratify bylaws
HUBBARD -- The Mahoning Valley Green Party will ratify its bylaws at a picnic at noon Wednesday at the Heaths on West Liberty Street in Hubbard. By ratifying its bylaws, the group will become voting members of the Ohio Green Party, said Betsy Johnquest, the group's Mahoning Valley representative. The picnic is open to the public. Those attending are asked to bring a meatless covered dish. Speaking at the picnic is Bob Gragson, the Ohio Green Party's state secretary as well as local activists and political science professors. Man shot in calf
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 18-year-old Youngstown man was shot in the right calf Saturday outside his Himrod Avenue home. Police said Melvin Machado-Martir told them he left his home at 12:25 a.m. to use a pay phone when he felt a sharp pain in his calf and realized he had been shot. The man said he did not see who shot him. Machado-Martir was treated at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
