NEW GALILEE, Pa. -- A man hit by a train was in fair condition at a Pittsburgh hospital this morning. A second man, Michael J. Jeffries, 21, of RD 1, New Galilee, died instantly after being hit by the Norfolk & amp; Southern train.
Pennsylvania State Police said Jeffries and Robert Lowe Jr., 25, Box 483, West Pittsburg were walking along railroad tracks south of Haggerty Road in New Beaver Borough at 10 p.m. Saturday when they were hit.
An autopsy on Jeffries is planned today at the Ellwood City Hospital, said Lawrence County Coroner J. Russell Noga. Police said the train was traveling about 35 mph and the men failed to get off the tracks when the train approached. Lowe was taken by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian.
