hMusical's a beauty, but costume's a beast
One of the wonders of Disney's Broadway musical version of "Beauty and the Beast" is the elaborate costumes. Elaborate doesn't come easy, says actor Tom Aulino, above, who will appear as Cogsworth the Clock when "Beauty" opens Tuesday night at Allen Theatre in Cleveland. The Cogsworth getup weighs 35 lbs. It's rigged underneath with a weight belt that helps Aulino to carry the added girth on his hips and spares his back.
Aulino, of Totowa, N.J., loves to take family members and friends on backstage tours in the cities he visits. "It's jaw-dropping when you see how many wigs and costumes are stored backstage" at every show, he said.
Aulino may see at least one familiar face in the Allen Theatre audience. He met and became friends with Dr. Rebecca Natale of Warren, a periodontist, while they were students at Northwestern University in Chicago, he said.
He's sure there will be plenty of children in the crowd. The story is familiar to the younger set, thanks to Disney's animated movie. Some girls even wear yellow dresses to emulate Belle, the story's heroine. "I find it so terrific that this is their entryway into theater," Aulino said. "Maybe they wouldn't be going to see a live play if it wasn't a story they're crazy about."
"Beauty and the Beast" continues through Feb. 17 at Allen Theatre on Playhouse Square. Call Tickets.com, (800) 766-6048.
Remember then?
This week in 1964, the Beatles made their first live U.S. television appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show." An estimated 73 million people tuned in to watch them perform five songs, including "I Want To Hold Your Hand."
