MILL CREEK METROPARKS Fast facts



Location: The north end of Mill Creek Park is between the McKinley Avenue and Glenwood Avenue intersections with Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown; the south end is between the Lockwood Boulevard and Mill Creek Boulevard intersections with U.S. Route 224 in Boardman.
The Mill Creek MetroParks administration offices are on a 317-acre experimental farm on state Route 46 that is leased from Mahoning County.
The park administration also operates:
UAn 11-mile paved bikeway that runs between Western Reserve Road in Canfield Township and County Line Road in Austintown.
U262-acre Vickers Nature Preserve on Route 224, Ellsworth Township.
U78-acre McGuffey Wildlife Preserve on McGuffey Road, Coitsville Township.
U76-acre Yellow Creek Park on Lowellville Road, Struthers.
The park also owns the 47-acre Buckeye Horse Park, which is adjacent to Vickers Nature Preserve and operated by the Buckeye Horse Park Association.
Mill Creek Park size: About 2,600 acres, including 20 miles of roads and 15 miles of hiking trails. The park also includes 28-acre Lake Cohasset, 44-acre Lake Glacier and 60-acre Lake Newport.
Mill Creek Park facilities: Lanterman's Mill; a 36-hole golf course; Fellows Riverside Gardens; the Davis Education Center; Ford Nature Education Center; Wick Recreation Area; Pioneer, Slippery Rock, Stitt, Wick, Scholl and Chestnut Hill pavilions; the Old Log, Birch Hill and Bears Den cabins; Newport and Glacier boathouses; Lake Glacier Passenger Boat; picnic areas.
The pavilions, cabins, passenger boat, and many other facilities in the park can be rented by the public. For more information, contact the park office.
History: Founded in 1891 by Volney Rogers. The park was operated by the city of Youngstown until 1989, when it became a metropark funded by a countywide tax levy. County voters had approved the levy in 1988.
Estimated 2002 general fund budget: $10.2 million.
Projected general fund income sources: $6.48 million from property taxes; $1.67 million from park activity fees; $1.21 million unencumbered carry-over; $599,000 from the county's Local Government Fund; $144,000 encumbered carry-over; $128,000 from the county's Local Government Revenue Assistance Fund; $30,000 from the Fellows Trust; $10,000 from the Mill Creek Park Foundation.
Administration: Led by a three-member board appointed by the county probate judge. Board members are Harry Meshel, M. Virginia Dailey and Jac Lynn Ridel. The board makes financial and personnel decisions for the parks, such as hiring the parks' executive director. The executive director, Susan Dicken, oversees the daily operations of the park and the seven park departments: Business, police, golf, horticulture, maintenance, planning and recreation. Each department is led by a director.
