Oldtimers faceChester on Sunday
STRUTHERS -- The Youngstown Oldtimers baseball team will face Chester W.Va., Sunday at Cene Park at 2 p.m.
The Oldtimers (9-4) are coming off a 13-6 victory over Penn-Ohio. Don Christian hit a grand slam and Charlie White connected for a three-run home run.
White finished with two hits and three RBIs, while Ray Baytos (three hits, two RBIs), Nick Simko (3-for-3) and Christian (two hits, four RBIs) also contributed.
Struthers sellingseason tickets
STRUTHERS -- Season tickets for the 2001 Struthers High football games are now on sale. Tickets may be purchased from Joe Mogulich.
The package includes five home games reserved ($25) or five home games general admission ($20).
Tickets for individual games may be purchased at the following places: the high school, Rip's Cafe, Lavilla Sports Bar and General Store.

Sciarra winsbowling tournament
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bobbi Sciarra rolled an actual series of 596 and had a handicap total of 679 to win the mid-July Youngstown Women's Bowling Association's 25th annual officers tournament at Wedgewood Lanes.
Sciarra will receive an engraved award, plus first-place prize money at a luncheon on Aug. 12 at the Elm Tree in Struthers. Following the luncheon, the YWBA will conduct its fall workshop and meeting. The agenda will include installation of officers and directors, committee reports and the distribution of 2001-2002 league supplies.
Canfield advancesto state tournament
CANFIELD -- Canfield's Little League team of 9-10 year olds will play in the state tournament this weekend in Tallmadge. Canfield drew a bye and will play at 8 p.m. Sunday against the Cambridge-Clyde winner.
Warren's Kokrakis first-round leader
CHARDON -- Jason Kokrak of Warren shot a first-round 73 to take the lead in the North Coast Junior Golf Tour championship of 16-19 year olds at Quail Hollow Resort and Country Club.
Struthers' Joe Zumpella had a 77 to tie for third on the par-71 course, while Warren's Christopher Macali and Chuck Scarbrough had an 83 and 85, respectively.
In the girls division of 12-15 year olds, Kelly Baytos of Warren had a first-round 95.

Oates takes leadin Public Links event
LEXINGTON -- Dave Oates of Canton shot a 2-under par 70 to move into a two-stroke lead Thursday after three rounds of the 73rd Ohio Public Links golf championship.
Oates, last year's runner-up, had a three-round total of 11-under 205 at the 6,600-yard, par-72 Pebble Creek Golf Club.
Jeff Marr of Cincinnati, who was second after the first two rounds, held onto that position with a 71 for a 207 total going into Friday's final round.
Raymond Sovik of Dublin, who was tied with Oates for the second-round lead, had a 73 Thursday and was third at 208. Sovik is a 1968 Mooney High graduate.
Another stroke back at 209 were defending champion Adam Holowczak of Parma and Chad Gress of Coshocton. Holowczak had a 71 and Gress a 69 in third-round play.
Matt Kempe, a 1998 Mooney High grad, shot a third-round 70 and stands at 211.
Erie bests Akron
AKRON -- Tim Kalita pitched 7 2-3 strong innings as the Erie SeaWolves beat the Akron Aeros 3-1 Thursday in the Eastern League.
Kalita (12-6) allowed a run on five hits, walked one and struck out seven. Terry Pearson picked up his 19th save with a hitless 1 1-3 innings, allowing one walk.
Jason Stanford (4-8) took the loss for Akron. He struck out eight over seven innings but allowed three runs.

Hingis, Capriati winCARLSBAD, Calif. -- Top-seeded Martina Hingis and third-seeded Jennifer Capriati advanced to the quarterfinals of the Acura Classic.
Hingis beat Alexandra Stevenson 6-1, 6-3, and Capriati overcame a 1-3 deficit in the first set to beat 15th-seeded Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia 6-4, 6-2.
