LEFTY TRIVIA And a quiz to see how 'gauche' you are
ARE YOU REALLY LEFT-HANDED?
You might think it would be easy to tell if you're left-handed, but the hand you write with isn't always a good indicator. Experts say we're all somewhere in between, with most people having a weaker or stronger preference for the right hand. Many people routinely perform some tasks with the right hand and others with the left. Societal pressure has something to do with that. For instance, no one ever shakes with the left hand, so even lefties always do that right-handed. Here are some questions to help you decide which category you lean toward.
Which hand do you normally use to:
Raise for answering a question.
Switch lights on and off.
Brush your teeth.
Comb your hair.
Use a hammer.
Throw dice.
Count things.
Open a door.
If you use your left hand to do a majority of the above activities, then you might actually be left-handed.
Also, if you put out your left arm to stop yourself from falling; climb stairs beginning with your left foot; cross the left lace on top of the right when tying shoes; or if your left arm is longer than your right, you're probably a natural lefty.
FAMOUS LEFTIES
There have been only six left-handed presidents, James A. Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
Both Colin Powell and Norman Schwarzkopf are left-handed, along with past military leaders like Horatio Nelson, George Patton and William Perry.
In the arts, Paul Klee, Michelangelo, Pablo Picasso and Leonardo DaVinci were lefties.
Michelangelo's David is left-handed, but most artistic representations of Jesus are right-handed. Satan is usually seen as left-handed. According to Matthew 25: 31-46, the people on God's right hand on Judgment Day will be sent into the kingdom of Heaven. Those on His left hand are to be cast into Hell.
In Great Britain, Queen Victoria, King George II and Prince Charles were all lefties.
Chang and Eng, the first recorded conjoined (Siamese) twins, were given names that simply mean "right" and "left."
Left-handed sports figures include Larry Bird, Martina Navrotilova, Pele, Shoeless Joe Jackson and Lefty Gomez. Most champion fencers are left-handed, but left-handers cannot play polo or jai alai for safety reasons.
