Hosts wanted for kids
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown-Cleveland chapter of the Children's International Summer Village still has openings for children ages 13 and 14 along with their families to participate in this year's interchange program with Brazil.
The five boys and five girls, along with an adult leader, will host children from Brazil in their homes this December. Our delegates will travel to Brazil in July 2003. This three-week program is an opportunity for our youths to get to know children of the same age and gender from Brazil and host them in their homes. The program enables participants and their families to form friendships and learn about different ways of life, social structure and culture.
There also are openings for adult leaders, who must be 21 years or older.
For more information and immediate consideration, contact Tracie Nicolaou, president of CISV, at (330) 755-6404.

Fire district open house
CANFIELD -- The Cardinal Joint Fire District will hold an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the district's two fire stations. Station one is on Lisbon Street, and station two is on Messerly Road. The district's new firetrucks will be on display, and firefighters will be offering safety tips. Children will receive a plastic fire helmet.
Firefighters ratify pact
STRUTHERS -- The nine members of the International Association of Firefighters Local 1910 ratified a new three-year contract Friday that would give them 2 percent raises retroactive to Aug. 1 if approved by city council, said union president Mike Agnone.
Agnone said raises in the next two years would be 3 percent.
Mayor Daniel C. Mamula declined to discuss terms of the contract because it has not been accepted by the council.
"Money is always an issue," he said. "We were pretty reasonable. Things are pretty tight."
City council's finance and legislation committee authorized the full council this week to enter into the contract pending resolution of any unresolved issues. Council is expected to act on the matter at Wednesday's meeting.
Rape sentencing set
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sentencing will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 23 in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for Chaz Bunch, Andre Bundy and Brandon Moore.
The three were convicted Wednesday for their roles in the August 2001 kidnapping, rape and robbery of a Boardman woman who was 21 at the time. Bundy and Moore were also convicted in the armed robbery of a Mayfield Street couple earlier that night.
Bunch, 17, and Moore, 16, each face between 60 and 100 years in prison. They were tried as adults and found guilty of multiple counts of aggravated robbery, rape and kidnapping.
Bundy, 19, was found guilty of two aggravated robbery counts and faces six to 20 years in prison.
Judge R. Scott Krichbaum delayed their sentencing so a background check could be done first. All three are being held in the county jail pending sentencing.
Leaf, tree limb pickup
HOWLAND -- Residents are encouraged to put leaves and tree branches at the curb for pickup programs this month. Leaf pickup continues through November. Biodegradable leaf bags are available for sale at the township administration building. Use of the bags, which are sold in $1 packs of five, will become mandatory next year, officials said. Tree limbs up to 6 inches in diameter will be collected by township workers from Oct. 21 to Nov. 15. Residents are asked to stack branches with the cut end facing the street. No roots will be accepted.
